Annual summary (2007)
2007 summary for group
There were many things we celebrated in 2007.
We had four people graduated in the summer: Santiago Faucher, Wei Feng, Hualong Pan and Rachel Gong. Santi and Rachel are now in Xerox Research Centre; Wei in GE, and Hualong in NRC. The gang of four are doing well.
We had two people joined the group in September: Jason Doggart and Tom Kowpak. Both were MAC graduates and supermen in their class. Jason is doing thesis research in Xerox and Tom in NRC Ottawa.
Santi was appointed as an Adjunct Professor by McMaster. While having a full time job in Xerox, Santi is cosupervising a few of our people and provided great help to the group. Particularly worth mentioning is that he succeeded in a grant application recently. We are recruiting a postdoctoral and a graduate to work on the project.
The group's size was reduced a little in 2007. But we still have 10 people at the moment:
Jerry Chen, Moe Hajabed, Mark Machado, Ping Liu, Shane Gao, Mary Jin, Sara Alibeik, Helen Gu, Tom Kopak and Jason Doggart.
Many of these people have become senior or matured in the group and will graduate in 2008. I expect another big change in 2008 in terms of people.
Our research productivity is still good. We had 13 papers appeared with 12 included in SCI (except for Wei's paper in Biointerfaces). This year's superstars are Hualong and Santi. The former had one in JACS and another in Adv. Matl. The latter has one in JPSPS Highlight and another in IECR.
What appeared in 2007 reflected 2006's work. There is an interesting observation. Among the 13 papers, 5 were generated from McMaster (Hualong, Santi and Wei), 2 from Emeritus (Prof Yu in JIPT and Prof Ye in Laurentian), 5 from Zhejiang University (1 AIChE, 2 Macromolecules, 2 JPSPC), and the other one from Tianjin. We also have 7 papers accepted (1 from Hualong and 6 from Zhejiang). In 2006, I spent about 2 months in China and 10 months in MAC. In 2007, I split half-half. It looks like the 20/80 rule started to work on me.
I am taking sabbatical leave in the 2007/08 academic year. Time flies. Seven years ago, I did the same. Thanks to Dr. Wenjun Wang and the supermen of the time, the group had a very successful year. It made me felt like I was not needed as a supervisor and that Zhu's group was automated.
This year, we continued our tradition. We thank Prof Faucher's great help to the group while I am away. We also thank Helen Gu and Shane Gao who provided leadership in the daily operation of the group. With the current people becoming matured in research, I anticipate a great 2008 in terms of research productivity. We are targeting high and we will make it.
I hope this email can catch some of the excitements in 2007 and provide our emeritus people with updated information about the group. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead of us - 2008! I have all the confidence with the group that will continue her glory.
Warmest regards,
Shiping Zhu
