Annual summary (2018)
I am above the North Pole flying from Toronto to Shanghai after spending a bizarre holiday in Hamilton. I planned a lot but achieved nothing. It’s all because of crashing of iPhone and Mac laptop. My iPhone kept remind me to update for months. I ignored it until the Christmas Eve. After press update, my life went back to the era Before Liberation. Indeed, it’s a silent night and holy night.
iPhone asked to connect iTunes of Mac laptop. The latter asked update. After click update, all gone. The only option was reset.
Yes, it’s the time to reset for the Year of Pig. It’s also the time to summarize the Year of Dog.
1, In research, we published 8 papers, the lowest record over decades. Considering the transition, it was still an accomplishment. While the record of publication was no good, we succeeded in application of two major projects, Guangdong Pearl River and Shenzhen Peacock, which resets our goals in research for the years to come. I am confident we will go up to another level of quality and quantity in publication. We also organized a major conference on December 15, having over 20 Polyzhu people attended. It’s impressive. The happiest thing as a professor is to have my students succeed and to see them growing in career. In this regard, I feel pride.
2, In administration, the experience of past 1.5 years was very different. It confirmed the advice I got from my supervisor Archie Hamielec: “Science is simple, people are complicated.” In research, we have objectives, hypotheses, approaches, results, analyses and conclusions. In people business, you’d better not be so black and white, or you’ll start to spin around around. There are many things to deal with student affairs. Everything goes to heart. Student's smile was my sunshine all day. Student's frown made me sleepless all night. The most difficult part was emergent and mysterious cases. Interestingly enough, my research training helped me to solve quite a few such cases. I am thinking if I would be better off to work as a police chief.
3, I continued going high schools. It’s a total of over 90 top schools. Lectures were well received. Originally it was for an admission purpose, it became different later. High school kids need true scholars give no misleading unbiased talks and the mankind needs talented youth go science and engineering. I cannot imagine a world with all smart people counting money with no smart people printing money.
The Dog is gone. The Pig is here. It’s my animal year. It’s my year and it’s our year.
