Annual summary (2010)
2010 publication summary
1. We published 18 journal and 1 proceeding papers. Our top publisher is Mary Jin 3, Shane Gao 2 and Helen Gu 2. Congratulations!
2. Among this total, five were resulted from the strong collaboration with ZJU, particularly with our former group super star, Dr. Wenjun Wang, who has recently received the promotion to tenured professorship. Let's congratulate to Wen-Jun for his achievement in such a short time in ZJU (joined 2.5 years ago).
3. Our work has received a total number of the SCI citations >4,500 with H-index 37. The bests are from Wei Feng and Hualong Pan whose papers received the highest SCI citations in 2010. By any standard, the record is superb for a group working in the areas of engineering sciences. Thank you all and each for your important contributions. I am very proud of you.
2010 activities and perspectives
4. In 2010, Jason Doggart, Tom Kowpak, and Jerry Chen left the group and started work in industries, with all in Ontario close to Toronto. Mary Jin defended and joined Weian Zhao (happen to her husband) in Boston. The most update is that we are expecting a baby soon. Congratulations to all of these people, who joined the emeritus group.
5. In 2010, Boris Bitsch (make sure spelling correct) completed his half year visit and went back to Karlsruhe to continue graduate study. He produced a nice paper that appeared in MARE. Bean Young completed his one year visit and went back to Sichuan to finish his thesis. He produced two submissions. Prof Xiao from Nanjing has also completed his one-year visit and he is very happy with his daughter's English learning in Canada. Xiao is probably the best father I have ever seen. Really impressive. We thank all these visitors for their contributions.
6. Our current group consists of fiver Masters (Nels Grauman-Neander, Mark Rattle, Cam Derry, Rummana Syeda and Hongyu Lu), four Ph.D. (Ping Liu, Helen Gu, Sara Alibeik and Meng Li), and two visitors (Weifeng Liu of ZJU and Shujun Liang of BUCT). The first three Masters and the first three doctoral candidates will be graduating in 2011. We expect a big change in the coming year and must do an active recruitment.
7. In 2010, our current people received numerous awards, incl. Helen Gu (Robert Anderson Award, Archie Hamielec Award, PolyMAC Presentation Award and GSA Travel Award - Helen is really good at presentation), Nels Grauman-Neander (Dept TA Award, GSA TA Award, GSA Distinguished Service Award and PolyMAC Poster Award), Mark Rattle (shared the PolyMAC Poster Award with Nels). Mark Rattle is also serving as the President of The Graduate Club. The spirit of leadership and service of Zhu's Group continues.
8. Throughout the year, we have learned so many news about our people. The career development and promotion remain to be very strong. Among many, Santi Faucher has become a manager in XRCC. Julie McLachlan is a manager/director of Green Canada. It seems our people are good at management that has nothing to do with your training here. To name a few, Guo Hua of GE, Fahad Al'Obaidi of SABIC, Weifeng Zhang, Jane Jin and so on. Aileen Wang has been promoted to a position as a VP Consultant in ExxonMobile headquarter. In the academic side, humble man Zhibin Ye received a Canada Research Chair at the age of 36 (Zhibin just called minutes ago and said it was not a big thing for him that I disagreed, considering that I started job at 35). Ni Zhao has become an assistant professor in Hong Kong. We congratulate on these people and wish you very best in continuing success.
9. In 2011, our people are not only productive in career but also busy producing babies. Wei Feng of GE Shanghai, Hualong Pan, Jason Doggart of Hatch, Goerg Witek of Graz and more all produced babies, with their wife's assistance. Congratulations. We are looking forward to their joining Zhu's group in future.
10. Last but not the least is the Group's most senior fellow - Dr. Shiping Zhu. It has been a very busy and rewarding year for him. As the Chair, the department received the best results in all the three program accreditation reviews (good for the next six years). The department recruited three outstanding new faculty members and is working on two more. His faculty and staff colleagues received various awards and recognitions throughout the year with many nominated and recommended by him. The department is in her good time and clearly has a brighter future. For his significant research and service contributions, Dr. Zhu was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering as a Fellow (FCAE, the highest recognition for Canadian engineers) in June. He also received a letter yesterday that he has been elected as a Fellow to Engineering Institute of Canada (FEIC) and will be presented in March 2011. Together with the Fellow of Chemical Institute of Canada (FCIC) in 2009, he has collected three (out of a total four) major fellowships available for Canadian chemical engineers and scientists. Wish him continue success in 2011!
