Annual summary (2009)
2009 Group Publication Summary
1/ We published 15 refereed journal papers. Among 15, 4 were from Mac, with Mary, Jason, Ping and Shane each contributed one. Though quantity is still an issue, quality is fine. APL, Chem Mater, Langmuir, and J Biomed Res. This record matches that of 2008.
2/ Our collaboration is still blossoming. 11 papers were from collaboration with various groups, with majority from Zhejiang University. The quality of the collaborative papers continued improving: 3 Macromolecules, 1 AIChE J, 2 IECR, 2 Polymer.
An interesting observation is that overseas groups worked much^N harder than us. They spent days and nights and weekends. I have been puzzled by this observation. Mac group does need to think about how to improve competency. Graduate studies in Canada are very relax, in contrast to a totally different situation in Japan, in Singapore, in US, in China. Fair play. People get what they struggle for.
3/ On the bright side, we had over 600 SCI citations in 2009, it made our total citations >3800. Our H-index has reached 35. This can be considered an excellent record in engineering science. I thank those who contributed significantly to this achievement. Of particularly worth mentioning are papers by Wei and Hualong.
2009 Activities and Perspective
4/ We have had two PhDs and two Masters graduated in 2009. Jerry continued as PDF in the group. Shane joined Zhejiang University as faculty. Jason accepted a position in Hatch. Tom continued in the group as a research assistant. We congratulate these emeritus and wish them very best in career development.
5/ Be frankly. If not because of Xerox's restriction in publication, we should have a superstar this year - Jason Doggart. Jason has had an APL paper published. He also invented a new method for printing lines with tens of micrometer's precision and self correction for errors. He got a patent and prepared a wonderful manuscript but being held by Xerox until very recently. All together, Jason probably has the record of research productivity among our Master's graduates.
6/ I suddenly realized that the low research productivity of 2009 was the aftermath of my sabbatical 2007/08. Our 2009 effort is reflected in the lists of our accepted and submitted papers. On this lists, we had 7 accepted and 7 submitted. Among 7 accepted, 6 were from Mac - Mary 2, Helen 1, Jerry 1, Shane 1, and Mark 1. Among 7 submitted, 5 were from Mac - Mary 2, Ping 1, Helen 1, and Tom 1. It looks great.
7/ We anticipate some breakthrough in our paper quality in 2010 based on 2009's work, in particular those of Helen Gu's and Jason Doggart's.
8/ 2009 is a big year. We had many new people joined the group. Nels Grauman, Mark Rattle and Cam Derry started Master's in September. Boris Bitsch came from Germany as a visiting graduate student. Meng Li started PhD in September. Bean Yang came to us from Sichuan as a visiting PhD. Prof Xiao will be arriving in Dec 30th. We have a total of 14 as of December 31, 2009.
2009 updates from some emeritus members
9/ Our Emeritus are doing very well in 2009. I penned down all the news but just could not remember where I save the list at this moment. My memory has been always embarrassing me in recent years. Let me try,
- Wen-jun Wang and Youqing Shen are doing well in Zhejiang University, and Shane joined the same department
- Santi Faucher and Jane Jin have been promoted to Manager positions.
- Zhibin Ye received Early Research Award, formerly called Premier Research Excellent Award of Ontario Government.
- Ramesh and Zhibin are doing very well In Laurentian and I was impressed during my visit in October/November.
- Wei and Jack are doing well in GE Shanghai. I was also very impressed during my visit in August. I also leaned during the visit that Hua Guo is doing very well in GE.
- Fahad became a manager for Sabic polyolefins
- ... ... sorry for missing other significant news.
10/ There are a few new fathers. Santi had his second baby girl Clara in August. Jerry Chen had his first son Gavin on Xmas day. There must be a few more, but could not remember whose.
11/ Helen Gu became President of Department Graduate Club. Congratulations. I strongly encourage service. Our group has a glorious history. If I remember correctly, Julie, Ed, Santi and Ailleen contributed significantly to the dept graduate club and other activities. Thank you.
12/ Shiping Zhu started his turn of service as Dept Chair in July. The first half year has been really interesting with all the meetings and program reviews. He is also a member of Senate and chairing a working group for McMaster-Dongguan Campus for the Faculty. Although busy (feeling like being a dept's "house wife" in daily activities), he is determined to make the dept a better place for colleagues and students, aims at excellence in teaching, research and student life. He hopes that in the new year once the UPR review is over he will have more time for his group students for research. Indeed, discussing research progress is most fun for him. He observed that the group productivity is linearly proportional to his time commitment to his students. Shiping Zhu was also elected as a Fellow of Chemical Institute of Canada, FCIC.
Thanks for the greetings (via xmas cards and letters and emails). I did not reply individually. Hope this email serve the same purpose.
I sincerely wish everybody a successful 2010.
